Why does web performance emit carbon?

Data transmission is not weightless. Running data centers, keeping networks active, and rendering complex javascript on client devices all consume grid electricity. Heavy websites translate directly to higher greenhouse gas emissions.

How is carbon footprint calculated?

Our model utilizes the Sustainable Web Design (SWD) v4 model. It projects energy consumption (~0.81 kWh per GB of transferred data) and scales it against local and global grid carbon intensities (gCO2/kWh) to estimate direct digital impact.

How B.C. Hydro makes a difference

British Columbia's power grid is roughly 98% clean and renewable (principally hydroelectric). Hosting and building websites in B.C. reduces operational emissions by up to 95% compared to fossil-fueled grids in other jurisdictions.
